Internationalization
The PPGZOO has attracted a growing number of applicants from several Brazilian states and abroad since its first selection process. This characteristic is certainly due to its innovative character regarding the applicability of zoological knowledge.
As part of the OAS program (PAEC OAS-GCUB) of Latin American exchange students for graduate studies in countries other than their countries of origin, the program receives, with its own scholarship, foreign students. From the PAEC program, PPGZOO has already received seven students, and currently the program has foreign students from Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Honduras, Peru and Venezuela.
The contributions of faculty members to the internationalization of the Program include ad hoc consultancy for research funding agencies abroad, partnerships for execution, funding, and realization of research projects and internships by faculty and students abroad, authorship in book chapters of renowned international publishers, organization of international scientific meetings, participation in editorial committees of foreign journals, and courses taught by researchers from foreign institutions.
The agencies abroad that count with the participation of PPGZOO faculty members in the mentioned activities include: International Atomic Energy Agency FAO/UN, Associación para La Naturaleza y El Desarrollo Sustentable (ANDES-Peru), Biotechnological and Biological Sciences Research Council (United Kingdom), Centro para el Estudio de Sistemas Marinos (CESIMAR, CENPAT - Argentina), Fonds National de La Recherche Scientifique (F.R.S.- FNRS- Belgium), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Instituto de Ecología A.C. (Mexico), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA/FAO/UN), PADI Foundation (USA), and Rufford Foundation (UK), Oxford University Museum of Natural History (UK), The Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund (United Arab Emirates), Universidad Regional Amazónica Ikiam (Ecuador), Universidad de La Republica, Montevideo (Uruguay); Université de Liège (Belgium); University of Bristol (United Kingdom); Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig - ZFMK (Germany).
The program's faculty members also serve as editorial board members of several journals: Ethnobiology and Conservation; Herpetological Journal; Myrmecological News; Ocean & Coastal Management; Studies on Neotropical Fauna and Environment; and Zootaxa.
